Vygotsky believed that the transformation of a child’s potential into reality occurred through engagement with a culture’s ‘tools’, which he called the ‘things’ the culture used to ‘make’ things, its language and its social structures. Doing things with those tools, Vygotsky argued, expanded what the child was capable of.
