Daily Short Thought Round-up #5
This week: wandering through the neurons with Moshe Bar's book Mindwandering
A warm hello to you,
You know how when you go to a playground there’s always this line you step over as you enter?
Something happens, eh, once you’ve crossed it. And the biggest shift is in your mind: an openness comes, a willingness to immerse yourself, a feeling of acceptance and a keenness to interact.
The line - the threshold - is important. It shapes how people move into the playground. If it’s level with the ground, the transition is effortless - the kid can dash into it - but the higher the threshold, the more conscious effort it takes to enter the playground - it has to be climbed into. Or the material might change; the rougher the material, the more friction is introduced into the transition zone, and so the slower they’ll go. Perhaps the shift is from natural to unnatural or vice-versa; this will cue an emotional element.
There’s a lot of noise around education, people calling for change from all directions.
For schools to change, the people in them have to cross a threshold. For many, that threshold is high, rough and feels unnatural.
The only way to help them cross it is by being patient and ‘with’ them, not spending all the time showing them how awesome the new swings are.
