I have hours of recordings of conversations I was part of with students, done during my fellowship research.
Every conversation left me interested in a nugget or two.
But then I’d go back and listen to the conversation, headphones in, alone.
Suddenly, I heard things that weren’t obvious to me when I was in the moment.
This simple act of going back and re-engaging with the conversation never failed to blow me away. I’d missed things. Most of the time, those things were crucial clues that helped me see and understand the learners deeply.
It was exhilarating stuff. Have you felt it too?
I’ve got some bad news: it takes hard work. A method to help you capture and document what’s happening will help. The discipline of reviewing it will be necessary.
