She is willing to talk about her project, but only to a point.
And sure, I’m not her teacher, but I have been invited into the conversation by her teacher. She has played nicely to this point, but now we’re shifting into questions that are pushing her thinking a bit, inviting her to think a bit deeper, to move beyond the surface.
She shuts down. We’ve reached the limit of how far she’s prepared to go. Out comes the phone.
“I’m too busy to talk about that stuff now.” It’s a curious statement.
It’s not atypical though, is it, this kind of self-imposed constraint, this retreat into the virtual world.
I really struggle when learners respond like this. I used to think the best way forward was to make them do stuff, to just push on through the resistance.
Now I’m not sure that’s the thing to do. Now I don’t know what to do, other than feel sad.
